The Challenge
In light of the COVID-19 crisis, city decision-makers, like those in Fontana, CA, are now tasked with implementing unprecedented regulations for residents. In an attempt to “gauge” residents’ needs yet at the same time adhere to regulations, many cities have shifted to virtual city hall gatherings.
Following a discussion at the City Council about setting stricter vs. lighter restrictions, the City of Fontana needed to better understand its greater community’s sentiment and response towards these new conditions. It was crucial for Fontana leadership to clearly and accurately assess “what side of the fence a majority of residents sat on”. Should they seek to open the city and how can they back their decision with data?
The Zencity Solution
The City of Fontana leveraged Zencity’s AI technology to aggregate resident discourse from social and local media sources and dissect the data in search of comments expressing a position on the regulations and compliance. These capabilities helped them easily identify sentiment on the question of continuing and/or harshening vs. loosening COVID-19 regulations.
The data revealed (see below) that the majority of residents clearly expressed a preference for the city and fellow residents to further improve and enforce regulation compliance and even expand regulations to ultimately stop potential transmission of the virus. The breakdown of data not only provided actionable insights on the perspectives and associated sentiments of the greater community, but it also validated the City’s decision. This enabled the City of Fontana to move forward with their crucial strategy with a higher level of clarity and alignment with residents’ needs.
